The verdict
The X50 Ultra is the best carpet cleaner we have run under $1,400. On 40mm shag it recovered 91% of a measured sand load in three passes, and it did it at 62 dB — quieter than every other unit we have tested above 9,000 Pa. Mapping was the most reliable of the fourteen robots in this category: 118m² across two floors, no manual no-go zones. The dock is the catch, and it is a big one: 45cm wide, 58cm tall, and it needs 20cm of clearance either side, which rules it out of most small flats.

How it scored
Every rail below shows this unit against the range of all fourteen robots we have run the same tests on. A score on its own is a number; a score inside the range is a finding.
Suction power. Second-best of the fourteen units we have run on the same 40mm shag.
Noise at max power. Measured 1m from the unit on hardwood. Quieter than every other unit above 9,000 Pa.
Runtime, mixed floors. Nine weeks of daily runs, averaged. Dreame claims 180 minutes in eco mode.
Mapping accuracy. Mapped 118m² across two floors without a single no-go zone edit.
App usability. Fast and reliable, but schedules are buried three screens deep.
Nine weeks on shag carpet
Carpet is where robot vacuums are separated, and shag is where most of them stop being useful. We ran the same test every unit gets: 20g of graded sand worked into a 1m² patch of 40mm shag, three passes, weighed recovery.
The X50 recovered 18.2g of it. The only unit that has done better is the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, at 18.6g, and it took four decibels more to get there. What the number does not show is the behaviour: the X50 slows to a crawl on shag and audibly loads up, which is the right response and the opposite of what the cheaper units in this category do.
It is the only robot in this price band that treats shag carpet as a problem to solve rather than a surface to drive over.
Edges are the honest weakness. The side brush reaches within about 12mm of a skirting board, and in a room with deep shag it leaves a visible margin. If your floors are mostly hard with rugs, this will not matter. If they are wall-to-wall carpet, budget for a stick vacuum for the edges.
The dock problem
We are putting this in its own section because it is the reason to not buy this robot. The dock is 45cm wide and 58cm tall, and docking is unreliable without roughly 20cm of clear space on each side. In a 45m² flat that is a piece of furniture, not an accessory. Measure the space before you order.
If the dock is the dealbreaker, this is the alternative we would buy instead.

Questions
Does it actually clean shag carpet, or just push dirt around?
It cleans it. On 40mm shag it recovered 91% of a measured 20g sand load in three passes, second only to the S8 MaxV Ultra out of the fourteen units we have run the same test on. It does slow down noticeably, and it will not reach the last few millimetres against a skirting board.
How loud is it really?
Sixty-two decibels at one metre on maximum power, measured on hardwood. That is conversation-level: you can hold a phone call in the next room but not in the same one. In eco mode it drops to 48 dB, which is genuinely background.
Is the dock as big as it looks?
Yes. It is 45cm wide and 58cm tall, and it needs 20cm of clearance on each side to dock reliably. In a small flat this is the single biggest reason to buy something else.
Do I need to buy Dreame’s own detergent?
No, and we ran it on a generic hard-floor cleaner for the last four weeks with no difference in results or any complaint from the app. Using two-thirds the recommended dose avoided the streaking we saw at full strength.
How long did you test it, and did you buy it?
Nine weeks of daily runs across 118m² of hardwood and shag carpet, on two floors. We bought the unit at retail; Dreame did not supply it and has not seen this review.
